Costco UI Redesign - Study Case
Case Study: Redesigning Costco's Mobile UI for a Better User Experience
Introduction
Costco's mobile interface is a crucial touchpoint for customers looking to shop conveniently. However, the previous design faced usability challenges, such as cluttered navigation, lack of visual hierarchy, and an inconsistent iconography system. This case study explores the redesign process and the improvements made to enhance user experience.
Identifying Pain Points
The previous UI had several usability issues:
Unclear navigation: The bottom navigation lacked intuitive icons.
Overloaded interface: Too many text-heavy elements made scanning difficult.
Inconsistent design: Icons and action buttons did not follow a uniform style.
Inefficient search: The search bar was not easily accessible.
Design Goals
To address these issues, we set out to achieve the following:
Improve navigation clarity with easily recognizable icons.
Enhance visual hierarchy by grouping related elements.
Streamline user actions through a simplified, intuitive layout.
Maintain brand consistency with Costco's identity.
Key Design Changes
1. Revamped Quick Actions
The new design introduces a dedicated "Quick Actions" section with clear, distinct icons for frequently used features such as Orders, Grocery, and Savings. This allows users to access essential features quickly without unnecessary scrolling.
2. Organized Account Management
Instead of scattered settings, all account-related features, including Membership, Payment Methods, and Preferences, are now grouped under "My Account." Each item is accompanied by a clear icon for better scannability.
3. Enhanced Search Functionality
A prominently placed search bar at the top of the screen makes it easier for users to find products and services immediately.
4. Streamlined Bottom Navigation
The bottom navigation bar is now more intuitive, featuring essential icons for Home, Membership, Cart, and Menu. Each icon is clear and distinct, reducing user confusion.
Results and Benefits
Faster Navigation: Users can access key features within fewer taps.
Improved Readability: The use of icons and structured sections enhances content discoverability.
Consistent User Experience: A unified design language creates a more seamless shopping experience.
Conclusion
By refining Costco’s mobile UI with a cleaner layout, intuitive icons, and organized navigation, the redesign significantly enhances usability and customer satisfaction. This approach ensures that users can shop effortlessly, making their experience more efficient and enjoyable.
